Frostpunk 2 - Thoughts?

I loved Frostpunk back when it was released in 2018. It was exactly my type of game but I have my reservations about Frostpunk 2. It had some good reviews but it just doesn't have the same emotional connection as you got with the original.

The one thing I loved about the first game is that you actually came to care about the colonists in your charge. Each had a name and a face. You could relate to them. You made decisions to protect them. In Frostpunk 2 the scale has changed. The sequel has you managing a city, but an outpost at the edge of the wastelands. It was Stalin who said, "The death of one man is a tragedy. The death of millions is a statistic." (note: it was Kurt Tucholsky who originally said, "The war? I cannot find it to be so bad! The death of one man: this is a catastrophe. Hundreds of thousands of deaths: that is a statistic!" in 1932.)

And that's the issue with Frostpunk 2. It just doesn't have the emotional resonance that Frostpunk had. Because of the increased population - where each district in your city is the equivalent of an entire Frostpunk colony - you no longer care about the lives of your citizens like you once did.

Have you played it? What did you think?

I have played it and have mixed opinions on it.

The districts are nice but they're also kind of annoying. I enjoyed being able to choose where to pop down certain buildings or heat pumps. It made laying out the city a lot easier. I've seen some people play it who seem to have no issues and even excel. I struggle when it comes to balancing things out so the squalor doesn't become too bad. I end up with a bunch of my districts rioting and get voted out.

It's an entirely different animal than what Frostpunk 1 was. I think it was very brave of 11 Bit to expand the scope as they did. They could have just improved graphics and done a bunch of new scenarios.
