Carrie was Stephen King's first book, published in 1974. There was a great movie adaptation starring Sissy Spacek and directed by Brian De Palma released in 1976 - and considered a classic horror movie. It captured the themes of isolation, revenge, and the consequences of bullying.

Now, there's news that Carrie is getting a TV adaptation with an eight-episode series entering production on Amazon's streaming site, Amazon Prime. Mike Flanagan is specified as the showrunner for the new show and he brings a back-catalogue of previous King adaptations, having previously worked on Gerald's Game (2017) and Doctor Sleep (2019) with novella The Life of Chuck recently landing distribution and a character-driven adaptation of Dark Tower which begins with the core journey of Roland and his pursuit of Flagg.

Carrie follows the story of Carrie White, a shy high school girl who experiences extreme bullying from her classmates and severe abuse from her overly religious mother, Margaret White. As Carrie navigates adolescence, she discovers that she possesses telekinetic powers, allowing her to move objects with her mind.

The narrative escalates as Carrie faces relentless harassment, particularly during a humiliating incident at the school prom. After being doused in pig's blood by her classmates, Carrie unleashes her powers in a fit of rage, leading to devastating consequences for her peers and her town. The story explores themes of isolation, revenge, and the struggle for acceptance, culminating in a haunting portrayal of the impact of cruelty and the dangers of unchecked power.

The final scene stayed with me for a long time as a kid.
