Recommend the best action horror games for newbies to play. Sometimes these games can be pretty hardcore, not just in terms of mechanics and difficulty, but also for their horror elements. Dead Space, for example, was brutal.

What would you suggest to someone who wanted to get into action games with horror elements? What is it that makes it accessible for newcomers – Is it the balance of action and horror, the difficulty level, or the gameplay mechanics?

Let's hear your suggestions for the best games for people who want to dip their toes into these games.

If I had to pick out just one title which would ease someone into the action side of horror gaming easily, I'd most assuredly choose Prey:

In Prey, you awaken aboard Talos I, a space station orbiting the moon in the year 2032. You are the key subject of an experiment meant to alter humanity forever – but things have gone terribly wrong. The space station has been overrun by hostile aliens and you are now being hunted.

It successfully merges science fiction and horror in a way that can be unsettling but is action-focused. The horror is subtle, relying on suspense over jump-scares. There's also a skills tree so you may adapt your playstyle in a couple of ways. You can improve health, stamina and weapon specialisms if you want to go down the action route, or, if you prefer, you can adopt a more stealthy approach with a mimic ability and hacking/engineering.

The game also rewards exploration, with levels designed in such a way to avoid heavily guarded areas via hidden routes, air vents, and maintenance tunnels. You can occasionally navigate around enemies or set up traps if you’re not interested in direct engagement.

If you're interested in trying it, the game is currently heavily discounted on Steam:

Great recommendation. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Did you ever try the original 2006 version of Prey?

I did not, no. There is only so much time and so much money at my disposal; and back in 2006 I had even less time and even less money.

I did really enjoy Prey from 2017. I had a lot of respect for Arkane Studios. Dishonoured was an exceptional title. Dishonoured 2, doubly so. (HA!) It was a terrible shame to see Redfall fail so badly. It was a very interesting premise.

Some of the reviews for Redfall are suggesting that it's actually a pretty decent game that just got a lot of hate. I haven't tried it so Al's jury is out at the moment. I really enjoyed Dishonoured. The stealth elements were really well done.
